This is a free event!
Chemilumen Workshop with Rosalba Breazeale
The Chemilumen involves the combination of Lumen printing process (combining light sensitive paper with objects to create unique and color prints) with additional chemicals that interact with or create a resist. This experimental process allows for various forms of mark making or painting to enter into each unique print. Students will be offered the opportunity to fix their prints during the workshop. No photographic experience necessary.
The 2-hour workshop will be held on Sunday, July 21, 2024 from 12pm-2pm in person. We will begin with a demonstration of various techniques for creating chemilumen photograms after which each participant will create their own. The end of the workshop will be devoted to fixing the print permanently. Remember to wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little messy.
Supplies: Each participant should bring objects that can fit on an 8in.x10in. piece of paper. Natural materials such as flowers and leaves, sheer fabric or small glass objects will make particularly impactful images. Keep in mind we will be working with cyanotype solution, rust pigment and dyes, which could stain any objects (or clothes) they come in contact with. All other materials will be provided. A detailed list of optional supplies will be provided upon registration.
Weather: This is an outdoor workshop. Please be prepared to work in the heat and sun (with some shade available). Bring a water bottle. Your are also welcome to bring a folding chair and snacks to share. In the event of rain, the workshop will still take place on a covered porch.
Cancellation policy: If you cancel more than 7 days before the beginning of your workshop, you will receive a full refund. Cancellation with less than 7 days notice will result in a half refund.

Anthotype Workshop with Rosalba Breazeale
An anthotype is an ephemeral photographic printing process that utilizes the photosensitive material of plants and the sun to create images in a wide range of colors. A photogram can be made by placing objects or a negative on top of sensitized paper. Ephemerality is a key aspect of this process, so keep in mind that the print may fade or deteriorate over time. Storage solutions will also be covered during the workshop.
The 2-hour workshop will be held on Saturday, August 17th from 11am-1pm in person. I will begin with a demonstration of how to make a the solution for a turmeric anthotype and talk about variations on the solution for other plant based pigments. Everyone will then mix their own solutions and coat paper. If the weather is sunny, everyone will be able to create a photogram, which is a cameraless photograph made by placing objects on light sensitized paper. In the event of rain, we will focus on coating paper with different plant based emulsions for everyone to try at home.
Supplies: Please bring natural materials such as flowers or leaves for the photograms. All supplies will be provided to make a Turmeric anthotype. If you would like to try out a different plant pigment, please feel free to bring a plant pigment source. I will send out a list of optional supplies and resources if you would like to purchase your own.
Weather: This is an outdoor workshop. Please be prepared to work in the heat and sun (some shade available). Bring a water bottle. You are welcome to bring a folding chair and snacks to share. In the event of rain, the workshop will still take place on a covered porch.

Cyanotype on Recycled Fabric Workshop
Unlike photographs created with silver, such as lumen or traditional silver gelatin prints, cyanotypes are made using a solution of iron compounds. Silver gelatin negatives, digital negatives or physical objects may be used to create a print that is archival and bright blue.
The 2-hour workshop will be held Sunday August 11, 2024 from 11am to 11pm in person. We will begin working indoors as I demonstrate how to mix and coat cyanotype solution on fabric as well as how to fix the print after exposure. Participants will then coat fabric. Should the weather be sunny, participants will create photogram exposures outside and fix their prints at the end. Otherwise, students will be able to take their coated fabric home to create photographs when they have sun.
Supplies: Each participant should bring 2D objects (flowers, leaves, sheer/semi-sheer fabric, etc) or 3D objects (small glass or solid objects with interesting silhouettes). All other materials will be provided. If you would like to bring your own fabric, it must be natural (100% cotton works best). I often find cotton bed sheets at thrift stores. Some cyanotype solution will be provided, but if you would like to coat a large piece of fabric, you should bring your own. A detailed list of supplies will be emailed within 48 hours of registration.
Weather: This is an indoor/outdoor workshop. Please be prepared to work in the heat and sun (some shade available). Bring a water bottle. You are welcome to bring a folding chair and snacks to share. In the event of rain, the workshop will take place indoors.
Cancellation policy: If you cancel more than 7 days before the beginning of your workshop, you will receive a full refund. Cancellation with less than 7 days notice will result in a half refund.

Chlorophyll Printing Workshop with Rosalba Breazeale
Left: Chlorophyll Print
Right: Digital Negative
Chlorophyll printing is an alternative photographic process where by photographic images are developed on natural leaves through the action of photosynthesis. This plant based process does not require chemicals to create the image since the photographs are exposed directly to the sunlight on plant leaves. There is an optional secondary step to permanently fix the print without which this remains an ephemeral process and the print may fade or deteriorate over time. No experience is necessary to create a photogram, which is a process by which 2D objects are placed on a light sensitive surface (in this case, a leaf).
The 2-hour workshop will be held on Saturday, July 27 from 12-2pm in person. I will demonstrate how to create a photogram or a photo using a digital negative on a leaf. We will discuss leaf choice and steps for permanently fixing a chlorophyll print. Should the weather be sunny, participants will create and begin exposing their chlorophyll prints. If it is rainy, participants will prepare their leaves for printing at home.
Supplies: Each participant should bring a clip frame or photo frame with glass (a rental can be provided upon request). Leaves will be provided for printing on or students may forage for their own in advance. Should you choose to forage your own, collect no sooner than the evening before and keep the stem in water overnight. Stencils and construction paper will be provided for photograms or you may bring your own 2D objects.
Advanced photo students may bring a high contrast digital positive negative (ex. image on right).
A detailed list of supplies will be emailed within 48 hours of registration.
